Work within your target heart rate zone for better fitness.

While starting out a new exercise program, keep down your heart rate at the lower side of your target heart rate zone and slowly climb to a higher level. Using this Target Heart Rate Calculator you can find the target rate range based on your fitness level. When doing vigorous exercise aim for a heart rate of about 70 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate (MHR).

To find your heart rate during exercise:

  • Stop for a short time.
  • Check your pulse for 15 seconds.
  • Multiply the pulse count by 4 to calculate the beats per minute.

Heart rate monitor can also be used to track your heart rate.
