You’ll want to choose a trainer who watches you closely to make sure that you are doing exercises properly, have breath control, and that you are using the right muscles. Good fitness trainers will also keep an eye on your progress to make sure that you are on the right track to reach your fitness goals. A fitness trainer should also listen to your concerns and complaints if an exercise doesn’t feel right and teach you an alternate way to do them if necessary. A good fitness trainer will also recognize the difference between whining and genuine discomfort.

Gives You a Balanced Fitness Program

You’ll also want to make sure that your fitness trainer gives you a properly balanced program between cardiovascular exercises, flexibility exercises and strength training. The reason for this is to make sure that your entire body is properly trained to handle numerous and strenuous exercises. You don’t want to run out of breath or stamina in the middle of weight training just as you want to make sure that your muscles are strong enough to get you through a 3-mile job.

Make sure that your personal trainer has a current NCCA-accredited certification. Being certified by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies means that they are trained with the skills and knowledge necessary to give clients an excellent workout routine. Ask fitness trainers how many years of experience they have and about the people they have trained before. Personal trainers who have experience with a variety of clients will probably suit your needs best as this means they know how to tackle a variety of body types, goals and medical conditions.

Suits Your Budget

Asking about rates is something that you’ll want to do in order to get your money’s worth. Rates will vary from trainer to trainer and will sometimes be varied based on the type of fitness training and the person being trained. In case of fitness clubs, the trainer only gets a percentage of the fee and a larger percentage goes to the fitness club itself.

Carries Personal Trainer Insurance

There are several personal trainers who work as independent contractors and not as employees of fitness clubs. Make sure that the trainer you select carries personal liability insurance. Although you might be hesitant to ask about this, it will only serve to protect both of you in the long run. A reputable fitness trainer won’t mind if you inquire about this.

Do your homework and be realistic about your fitness goals. Choose a trainer who’s just right for you, not one who has trained a celebrity or someone who you desire to look like.
