Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that covers the ‘sclera’, the white of the eye. Pollen, dust, and animal dander are the common triggers of allergic reactions, known as allergic conjunctivitis. Chemical conjunctivitis is caused due to chemical irritants such as smoke, fumes, etc. Both allergic and chemical conjunctivitis are not contagious. Infectious conjunctivitis is the most severe type of conjunctivitis. It is caused by viral or bacterial infection and spreads from person to person. Dirty and unhygienic surroundings may cause epidemics of this condition.

Indian Gooseberry: Indian Gooseberry juice mixed with honey is helpful in treating conjunctivitis. Drink 1 glass of gooseberry juice mixed with 2 tsp of honey, 2 times a day.

Breast Milk: Breast milk is considered as one of the best home remedies for conjunctivitis. Pour few drops of breast milk into both the eyes, 3 or 4 times a day.

Carrots and Spinach: Raw juices of carrots and spinach are proven useful in conjunctivitis. Prepare a combination of spinach and carrot juice by mixing 250 ml of spinach extract with 350 ml of carrot extract. Various other raw vegetable juices are beneficial for treating conjunctivitis.

Castor Oil: Put 2 or 3 drops of castor oil in both the eyes, 3 times a day. Chewing castor leave may also improve eyesight.

Mud pack: Spread a thin cotton cloth over the eyes and cover properly. Apply a thin layer of clay and spread it evenly. Stay with the pack for about 20 minutes. Apply this pack 2 times a day. Make sure the clay used for preparing the pack is completely clean.

Coriander seeds: Prepare a decoction using ¼ cup of coriander seeds mixed with 50 ml of water. Use this herbal eyewash 2 times a day to relieve burning sensation and reduce pain.

Other Remedial Measures

  • Avoid eating too much of sweets.
  • Take a lot of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  • Wash your eyes with warm water several times a day.
  • Stay away from dust and pollution.
  • Avoid excessive reading and exposure to bright artificial lights.
