Eczema is an inflammatory disease of the skin which results in the formation of papules, pustules, or vesicles. Eczema is medically termed as dermatitis. It is a noncontagious disease that occurs in people of all age groups, but it is most common in infants. The infection causes itchy patches, scaly skin on the face, hands, scalp, knees, and other body parts. Scratching the itchy patches can aggravate the condition. Allergy to pollen, foods, animal hair, germs, or other foreign particles acts as common triggers for this infection. In chronic cases of eczema, the skin becomes thicker, and the texture resembles a bark.
Home Remedies for Eczema
Mango: Mangoes are regarded as one of the most effective remedies for eczema. Boil the pulp and skin of the fruit in 1 cup of water for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain the mixture and apply the liquid on the affected portions. This can be done several times a day.
Turmeric: Fresh turmeric powder is very beneficial in treating eczema. Use turmeric both externally and internally for faster healing. Mix ½ tsp of turmeric powder in 1 glass of milk and drink every day.
Neem: Boil the neem bark for 10 minutes and strain. Clean the affected areas with the warm neem water. This remedy helps in preventing itching sensation and infections.
Grind the bark of the neem tree and prepare a paste. Apply the paste on the affected parts, let it dry, and then wash off.
Muskmelon: Take muskmelon 3 or 4 times a day for 6 weeks. Only muskmelons should be taken every day while undergoing this treatment. Start by consuming 3 kg of melons a day during the first week and then increase the intake by 1 kg thereafter. Since muskmelons are high in water content, additional water intake is not required. The fruit is effective in chronic and acute eczema.
Coconut oil: Take little coconut oil and boil it with few dried garlic cloves. Keep it in heat till the color of oil turns dark. Filter the oil and keep it aside to cool. Apply the oil on the itchy patches regularly.
Sun bath: Sun light is a nature’s scavenger. Sun bath can be taken on alternate days or at least twice a week. Take a bath in the morning during sun rise. Sit under the sun light for sometime till you sweat out well. Apply mud pack on your entire body and let it dry for an hour. Then take a cold water bath.
Other Remedial Measures
- Use a clean and soft cloth to wipe your body.
- Inhale a lot of fresh air.
- Drink 2 or 3 L of water a day.
- Rub your body thoroughly with palms after bathing. Avoid using towels.
- Apply coconut oil on the affected parts to keep the skin soft.
- Regular walking is recommended to activate the bowels.
- Avoid onion, radish, garlic, sugar, salt and cereals. Drinking boiled milk is not advisable.
