10 Foods to Boost Brain Power

Brain power is what we all run on to keep us going. By eating normally we can maintain a normal level of brain power, but if for some reason we are not eating enough then brain power can decrease as a result.

What are brain foods?

Brain foods are simply foods that boost our brain power, and ultimately our functioning. Omega-3 is extremely good for the brain and eating foods heavy in Omega 3 is advisable, like eating fish 2 times a week. You can also get Omega-3 as a supplement, and it is worth getting if you are not into fish, or simply do not like it.

What you do need to remember though is that if you eat a food rich in brain power, you can diminish that effect by eating foods that are poor on brain power. Alcohol and drugs are the worst, though not foods, but just saying for your information. They tend to kill off the brain cells and that is not going to help brain functioning.

10 Brain power boosting foods

There are many foods that are good for our brain power. Here are just 10 foods that are good for brain:

Bananas: Bananas are rich in potassium that helps in keeping our brain more alert. Eating bananas regularly keeps the brain functioning at the best level.

Lean Beef: Lean beef is a good source of iron and it is one of the best absorbed sources. High iron improves concentration. Lean beef also contains a good amount of zinc that improves memory power. Vegetarians can take soy and black beans which have the same benefits.

Cheese and Walnuts: Eating cheese along with walnut is highly effective in boosting brain power and the effect is more if taken during the morning hours. If cheese is eaten alone it can dull brain so it has to be taken only with walnut.

Eggs: Eggs are packed with loads of choline that is important for the full development of  the child’s memory center in brain. Taking one egg per day is sufficient.

Peanut butter: Peanut butter is a superb brain food. It has plenty of  Vitamin E, the anti-oxidant that protects nervous membranes. This tasty food also has Thiamine(Vitamin B1) which is crucial for glucose-energy conversion. It also helps our body metabolize carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and these carbs are the fuel for brain to keep it alert and efficient.

Wild salmon: Wild salmon is an incredible food for brain. It is one of the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA which plays a vital role in the growth and functioning of brain. It also keeps our brain sharp and improves memory power. Eating salmon regularly reduces the risk of risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Spinach: Spinach plays a major role in maintaining brain health. The potent anti-oxidants present in spinach reduces the effects of aging on the brain. It protects the brain from free radical damage and it also sharpens motor skills in children.

Potatoes: Potatoes are rich in carbohydrates that helps in maintaining the blood glucose at optimal level and thereby keeps the brain alert and active for more hours. Potatoes are also effective in boosting memory power.

Brown rice: Brown short-grain rice is complex carbohydrate food with fiber that fuel our brain and improves brain health. If you don’t like brown rice then you can take wheat pasta which is equally good.

Milk: Milk is essential for the development of brain cells. The Vitamin B-12 present in milk improves the functioning of brain. Young children should regularly take cows milk and taking 1 or 2 cups a day is sufficient.

Why are these foods good for brain power?

The best foods that our brain could possibly get are carbohydrates. The reason for this is that they take the intestines longer to break down as the molecules are longer. As a result, the brain is given a steady and longer quantity of brain power.

How we can determine if foods are good for our brain is done by the glycemic index or GI. If foods are good then they will have a low glycemic index, as it takes longer for the pancreas to produce insulin, which in turn results in a more even blood sugar level.

Fruits have a very low glycemic index level and whole pieces of fruit are better than juices. Rice has a low GI too, as are most foods that are grains and cereals. Dairy products too have a low GI.

Surprisingly potatoes have quite a high GI, although they are still good for brain power, because of the carbohydrate in them.

Finally… Brain foods are incredibly important for our basic function and to excel past basic and to achieve what we can with our days.
