While starting out a new exercise program, keep down your heart rate at the lower side of your target heart rate zone and slowly climb to a higher level. When doing vigorous exercise aim for a heart rate of about 70 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate (MHR).
To find your heart rate during exercise:
- Stop for a short time.
- Check your pulse for 15 seconds.
- Multiply the pulse count by 4 to calculate the beats per minute.
