Terminalia arjuna is a medicinal herb used by Indian ayurvedic physicians due its ability to cure many of heart problems such as angina, hypertension and deposits in arteries and many more. This herb is commonly used in South India. It is known as Neer maruthu in Malayalam and Marutham Pattai in Tamil. Some commonly used names are – Arjuna, Arjuna Herb, Arjuna Root. Arjuna herb is easily available and we can see the tree in many places.
Arjuna herb strengthens the heart and protects heart from any kind of diseases or pain. Not only protects your heart from cardio vascular problems but it is also very effective in treating coronary heart diseases. The herb stimulates the heart muscles, nourishes the heart and stabilizes the contraction and expansion of heart. The ability of this herb is because of the antioxidant properties of the elements (flavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidins) present in it.
Its stem bark possesses glycosides, large quantities of flavonoids, tannins and minerals. Flavonoids have been detected to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and lipid lowering effects while glycosides are cardiotonic. Experimental studies have revealed its bark exerting significant inotropic and hypotensive effect, increasing coronary artery flow and protecting myocardium against ischemic damage. It has also been detected to have mild diuretic, antithrombotic, prostaglandin E2 enhancing and hypolipidaemic activity. There is ample clinical evidence of its beneficial effect in coronary artery disease alone and along with statin.
Terminalia arjuna is also found to be effective in preventing gastric ulcers. In ayurvedic shops it’s available in dried form. You can crush it and take it everyday in powdered form. Nowadays many shops have started selling as powder packets. You can take it with plain water or butter milk. You can take it every morning in empty stomach or after having your tea or coffee.
