Uveitis – Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Eye is made up of three regions namely outer layer known as sclera, middle layer known as uvea and inner layer known as retina. Uvea is made up of three regions namely iris, choroid and ciliary body. Any inflammation of these three regions may result in Uveitis.

Iris is the most affected region and the type of Uveitis is called iritis. This is the most commonly occurring Uveitis. The inflammation caused may also affect other parts like retina, vitreous fluid and optic nerve.

FUNCTIONS – UVEA:

  • IRIS – Iris is a coloured region that regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
  • CHOROID – Choroid is a layer of blood vessels that supply blood to the retina.
  • CILIARY BODY – Ciliary body is simply a connector between the two regions iris and choroid.

SYMPTOMS:

Symptoms of Uveitis is very quick including-

  • Redness in the eye.
  • Light sensitivity.

INTERMEDIATE AND POSTERIOR UVEITIS SYMPTOMS:

  • Floaters.
  • Blurred vision.

CAUSES:

  • Causes of Uveitis are generally unknown.
  • Researches have found that the risk of developing Uveitis is associated with a gene called HLA-B27.
  • This gene also causes various other disorders like auto-immune disease of the spine and pelvis, ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Various other medical conditions that are associated with Uveitis include sarcodiosis, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, Bechet’s disease, herpes zoster and toxoplasmosis infections.
  • Past eye injuries and trauma to the eye can also lead to Uveitis.
  • Other causes of Uveitis include exposure to snake venom, complication of eye surgery etc.,

  • The inflammation can be reduced by eye drops that contain steroids.
  • Various other treatments include the usage of antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics are used to cure underlying infections and immune-suppressing drugs for Uveitis that is associated with autoimmune disease.
  • Researches have proved that even with treatment, Uveitis often recurs.

PEOPLE UNDER RISK:

The people who have the following disorders are under the serious risk of getting Uveitis, they include-

  • Tuberculosis.
  • AIDS.
  • Psoriasis.
  • Eye trauma.
  • Syphilis.
