Conjunctivitis – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

CAUSES:

  • Conjunctivitis is mainly caused due to bacteria, viruses or allergy caused due to pollen, eye makeup etc.,
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis is contagious and spreads due to rubbing of eyes. It is very common amongst school children as they do not know to wash their hands after rubbing.
  • Viral conjunctivitis is caused due to adenoviruses and often occurs after cold or due to certain respiratory infections.
  • A very vital state of conjunctivitis is known as Neonatal ophthalmia that basically affects infants at the time of child birth, when the mother has Chlamydia, contrated herps etc., It is very fatal as it can spread fastly throughout the eye and cause blindness if not treated at the correct time.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Redness of the white part of the eye.
  • Scratchy feeling while blinking.
  • Itching sensation in and around the eye.
  • Frequent watery discharge.
  • Crust formation all around the eyelashes.

PREVENTION:

  • Personal hygiene is a compulsory factor to reduce the risk of conjunctivitis.
  • Rubbing of eyes must be avoided and parents must guide their children not to rub their eyes.
  • Keep your hands and fingers always clean. Wash it regularly and keep it clean.
  • Spreading of infection can be avoided to a great extent by means of using separate towels, washcloths etc., and must not share these, which is a must.
  • People who do lot of makeup are advised not to use certain substances like contact lens cleaning solution, mascara, and eyelashes etc., which have caused allergic conjunctivitis in the past.
  • Neonatal ophthalmia, a vital state of conjunctivitis that affects newborn babies can be prevented by following a good prenatal and neonatal care.
  • For pregnant women, it is advised to take a test for sexually transmitted disease and treat it if necessary.
  • It is found that in many countries, newborn babies are treated with antibiotic eye drops on a regular basis, thus preventing the disease.

TREATMENT:

  • Antibiotic eye drops are used to eliminate the infection caused due to bacterial conjunctivitis.
  • Viral conjunctivitis does not require any antibiotic. The immune system of our own body cures it within a week.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis is treated generally using antihistamine eye drops.
  • It must be known that antibiotic is used to prevent secondary bacterial infection.
  • In unanic medicinal treatments, an ophthalmic formulation known as Qatar Ramad (QR) is effectively used in treating conjunctivitis.

PEOPLE UNDER RISK:

The people who have upper respiratory infections, allergies and frequent exposure to infected children are under high risk of attaining conjunctivitis.

NOTE:

All the medications mentioned are for your kind reference. If you come across these symptoms, go to an eye doctor. The diagnosis of conjunctivitis is mainly based on the appearance of the eye. In case of bacterial infections, a sample of the watery discharge is taken for testing. Conjunctivitis is no way related to sight and so any problem related to sight is not caused due to conjunctivitis and you must consult a doctor.
