Why Wild Salmon is Better than Farmed Salmon
Wild salmon and farmed salmon both have numerous health benefits, but I favor the wild variety of this versatile fish. Farmed and wild salmon differ mainly by the way and environment in which they are raised or grown. Wild salmon live natural lives in the ocean. Salmon raised in farms swim with a lot of other fishes in the pens. Pellets of groundup fish meal and oils are used to feed them so that they will grow more quickly. Due to this they have more fat content in their body compared to wild salmon. Another notable point is that, farmed salmon are treated with antibiotics to keep them healthy and their flesh is dyed to keep it pink. Studies have found that farmed salmon contain more organochlorine compounds, like PCBs, dioxins, and chlorinated pesticides; they contain up to a whopping ten times more contaminants than wild salmon. It has been found that farmed salmon from Europe has got more contaminants than that from Chile and North American farms.
Wild salmon get their food from natural sources and do not contain any dyes. Wild salmon’s cost is more expensive to buy but it has very little manmade pollutants like PCBs and pesticides. If you are unable to locate fresh wild salmon, you can substitute the canned variety. Cost is less than fresh salmon and is typically Alaska wild salmon, even if it is not indicated on the label. In particular, women who are pregnant or nursing will want to decrease their risk of consuming contaminants by choosing wild salmon instead of farmed variety.
